The problem: Imagine your mission-critical machine has a major failure with its steering box and has shut down your entire operation. Your machine's specialized replacement part is located overseas and won’t arrive for nearly a week, costing you thousands of dollars and hours of lost time.
The solution: You pull up an electronic schematic of your machine, find the part, purchase the part's CAD 3D rendering, send it to your 3D printing vendor, and the new part is ready for installation the next day.
Impossible - especially in the heavy equipment industry? In fact, it is already being done.
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the official name for this process but the shorthand name - 3D printing - describes this new technology best. 3D printing or AM builds a three-dimensional object from computer-aided design (CAD) model or AMF file by successively adding material layer by layer.
Originally created to use plastic printing materials, 3D printing now is able to print using cement, hot metals, glass, reactive powders - just about anything that can hold a three-dimensional shape.
During this session at AEMP's EquipmentSHIFT 2017 you will learn about the possibilities 3D printing can bring to your shop: How to outsource your 3D printing to get the best turn-around time at the lowest cost.
See how early adopters will gain a huge competitive advantage using 3D printing to cut repair wait times and costs.
Learn how to increase your working capital by reducing your parts inventory - just print what you need!
Find out how soon you can implement 3D printing into your maintenance and repair department.
Here's a picture of the world's first 3D printed excavator on display at this year's ConExpo. Project AME (Additive Manufactured Excavator) was overseen by Lonnie Love at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility in Knoxville, Tennessee, where the fully functional compact excavator was printed.
How long did it take to print this excavator?
The cab, made of carbon fiber reinforced ABD plastic, took only 5 hours to print using the Cincinnati Incorporated Big Area AM System. The 7-foot, 400-pound stick was printed entirely of steel using the Wolf Robotics Wolf Pack printer. Start to finish - just 5 days. The excavator's heat 13-pound aluminum exchanger was printed entirely on the Concept Laser X-line powder bed machine.
