The 2018 AEMP Leadership Summit was an extremely successful event with members from all across the industry converging in Denver, Colorado for two full days of important strategic committee and board meetings. Topics ranging from workforce development, conference education, and the future of the association were discussed. The association is growing at a record pace and we are excited to see what the rest of 2018 brings.

Furthermore, the work accomplished during this meeting reflects upcoming changes to the organization that will position it to continue to be the industry’s recognized leader in equipment management. Here are the board highlights from the 2018 Leadership Summit:

CEO - Stan Orr Retiring

Current CEO Stan Orr, FASAE, CAE, will be stepping down as the association’s chief executive officer on January 1, 2019 after 20 years of service to the organization.

In preparation of the upcoming change, in October 2017 the Board of Directors appointed a transition team consisting of Chairman Greg Peet, CEM, Immediate Past Chair Don Gengelbach, CEM, Chair Elect Mason Ford, CEM, Secretary Treasurer Dave Bolderoff, CEM, current CEO Stan Orr, and, as of the meeting in Denver, the President of AMPED Lynda Patterson, FASAE, CAE.

The Board of Directors approved a recommendation by the Transition Team naming AMPED, an association management company (AMC), as the new management company for the organization, replacing current AMC NonProfit Resources, which is owned by Cindy and Stan Orr.  Current staff at AEMP will remain intact with the exception of Stan and Cindy.  AMPED, a Madison, WI based AMC has offices in Madison and Washington, D.C., and will now expand to include offices in Colorado.  For more information on AMPED, AEMP encourages you to visit their website.

The board also approved the final steps of a transition plan that began in March.  Beginning July 1 NPR and AMPED will be entering into an integrated management agreement, whereby the two organizations will share staff and operational processes.  The CEO position will be posted nationally on June 15, and through a well thought out process of vetting candidates and conducting preliminary interviews, the transition team will interview final candidates in October at the EqSHIFT conference in Columbus, OH.

A final selection is expected in November and the new CEO will take over the reins from Orr on January 1.  Stan and Cindy are expected to be in Orlando for the 37th Annual Meeting where they will bid farewell to the organization.

Bylaw Revisions Require Member Vote

For the first time in almost twenty years, the voting members of AEMP will be asked to approve significant changes to the organization’s governing documents.   The board will put forth changes that reduce the size of the executive committee, create at large board seats designed to allow the organization to elect individuals who can lead on the critical issues facing the organization, remove archaic election processes and replace them with processes that require a more complete vetting of candidates, and create a chair system to ensure the chairman of the board has the experiences needed to lead the organization.  The voting members should be receiving a ballot with the new bylaws, the old bylaws with the revisions, and an explanation for the changes by July 1.

Other Actions Taken

The board also approved the 2018-19 budget, a plan to expand membership, and a move of the Technician of the Year Award from the annual meeting to the fall conference beginning in October 2019.
